SHORT ANSWERS
(Students should answer these questions in paragraph form, using numbers where appropriate. Mr. L.)

1. What are the four elements of a picaresque novel and explain how The Adventures of Huck Finn is an example of a picaresque novel.
  • The Adventures of Huck Finn is an example of a picaresque novel. This story is told in 1st person by Huck who is also the picaro, which means this person is of low character and is very likable. This is shown when Huck tells us he does not like school and when he says “Ain’t no home like a raft”. Also, the book contains many stories in no definite plot. It goes from being on the raft, to tricking a town, to dressing up like a girl. The last element of a picaresque novel is that the main character matures and grows throughout the novel. We see Huck become less racist towards blacks as he gets to know Jim. One time he says he wouldn’t of done it if he knew that was how Jim would have felt. (Kati)
  • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a picaresque novel. Huck Finn is an uneducated, teenage delinquent who runs away, skips school, and lives in the woods sometimes. He is roguish in the ways he acts. The story is also told from his point of view (first person). These two first characteristics can be shown by the quote: "At first I hated the school...". Also, the book tells a story made up of multiple storylines and no big plot. Some of these plots are: the part with the Grangerfords, scamming the friends of Mr. Wilks, and the jailbreak at the Phelps family. At the end of the story, Huck learns that black people have emotions and are human too. He also agreees to be civilized by Mrs. Phelps. All these show how The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a picaresque novel. (Caron)

2. What are the four mythic images that represent the significance of the novel? (See notes.) (Mr. L.)
  • The first mythic image is the Mississippi River as the enduring symbol of the United States heartland as the gateway to the west which represents the population migration and the river also cuts through the heartland in the sense that the river is life giving. The second image is the transition from steamboats to rafts to show that water travel touches the nomadic yearning and "going with the flow" is an ingrained belief in "fate". The third symbol is youthful innocence and the desire to run away to be free of problems and the river provides the "perfect freedom". The fourth symbol is the vanishing way of life that comforts us with "who we are" as a nation and as proof that we are moving forward and progressing. (Elizabeth)

3. Discuss the publishing history of The Adventures of Huck Finn, focusing particularly on the lost first-half of the manuscript and how the ownership issue was resolved with the Gluck sisters. (Mr. L.)
